If you have sensitive or dry skin and you have acne you’ll need to take care to, not only treat the acne, but to look after your skin. Most acne treatments will cause your skin to dry out as they are intended to prevent the production of oil and if your skin is already very dry this will only make your problems worse. Your skin will become red, flaky and irritated. If you have sensitive skin the ingredients in some of the acne treatments may cause redness and irritation so you must be particularly careful which remedies you use.

Why Our Skin Becomes Dry and Sensitive

As we get older our skin has a tendency to dry out as the cells begin to produce less sebum. Collagen and elastin in the skin are damaged and are not so easily repaired, which leads to to drier, less elastic skin. Additionally as women approach the menopause estrogen levels decrease which also causes the skin to dry out. Dry skin can also be a result of very cold weather and for those of us with sensitive skin it can easily be irritated by harsh ingredients in make up and skin care creams and lotions as well as fragrances and rough fabrics.

Acne Remedies For Dry and Sensitive Skin

1. Cleansing Products

A skin care routine including very gentle cleaning with a very mild cleanser and moisturizing is considered necessary if you have dry or sensitive skin. Cleansers that are sold specially for those who suffer from acne aren’t very appropriate for these skin types. They contain harsh chemicals for curing the acne but can result in redness and irritation if you have sensitive skin. You should select a more gentle cleanser as an alternative that contains only very mild ingredients and will not any more irritation to your skin. Do not wash your face too often and never scrub strongly or use a harsh cloth in an attempt to remove the dirt that is thought to be a cause of acne. This will just cause more irritation and distribute the bacteria that cause acne all over your skin which will inevitably result in more flare ups. Washing your face two times a day is enough with a very gentle soap. You can use either your hands or a soft, freshly boiled washcloth or if possible use disposable cotton pads.

2. Moisturizing For Dry and Sensitive Skin

You need to use a good moisturizer for dry skin so be sure to use a product that is not too heavy and will not increase the oil on the skin which will only make your acne worse. Thick lotions and creams are not suitable as they will clog the pores and set off more irritation.

3. Acne Treatments For Sensitive or Dry Skin

Some chemicals that may be used in acne treatments include vitamin A derivatives such as retinol, salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. For sensitive or dry skin choose one with a low concentration at first so that you can see your skin is affected. If it doesn’t cause redness or irritation you could use a product with a higher concentration. Don’t use all over the face but use a small amount directly in the problem area and only apply once a day until your skin becomes more used to it. You could also consider using a natural cure for acne such as tea tree oil, either in a purchased product that contains tea tree oil, or by diluting some pure tea tree oil with water and using on your problem areas. Tea tree oil has proved to be nearly as helpful as benzoyl peroxide but does not dry out the skin as much.

In Conclusion

Sensitive and dry skins do get acne and require special looking after to prevent making the condition of your skin much worse while you are treating your acne. Always use acne treatments with as mild ingredients as you can and think about trying acne home remedies as an alternative to the harsher OTC products that are available.
